Best Annual Report Award - 2013  Ta Kung Pao

In spring of 2013, the price of gold slumped suddenly, and the plunge triggered consumers’ rushing to buy gold jewelries. Chinese Dama, a group of middle-aged women, became famous in this rush by purchasing over 300 tons of gold within 10 days. They were believed to have even beaten short sellers of Wall Street and were deemed the primary support for the price of gold. With its widely scattered jewelry retailers, Hong Kong becomes one of the important "battle field" for Dama to sweep gold products. I and three other reporters spent a month to conduct interview and research to uncover stories of the rush. We finally discovered that these Chinese Dama sought their social identity from collective action and they regarded gold as a form of security instead of an investment, so their demand was limited. By combining this research with an analysis of changes in the international economy, we concluded the price of gold would continue to plunge. This series of reports received over 10000 webpage views and won our team the Best Annual Report Award of 2013 within our company.
